Tropical storm Noel is a hurricane now
by Nina Gotzmannova

Living in the Caribbean is no doubts the most pleasant thing one can think about. White sand on the beach, clear blue sea, high and beautiful palm trees… the picture of a paradise on Earth. Hot weather, lot of fresh fruit and peaceful lifestyle lure many visitors and tourists, who sometimes choose to live there for a while. But life in this paradise can bring some negatives too. One of them is tropical storms and hurricanes. The latest danger for residents of Bahamas is tropical storm Noel. In the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season it is the fourteenth storm with a name. The forecasters marked him on October 27, but since today Noel has strengthened and on November 1 became a hurricane. It is the fifth named hurricane; previous were Dean, Felix, Humberto and Lorenzo. Since today the hurricane had killed 106 people, but it's still a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest and less dangerous level on the Saffir/Simpson scale. This scale is classifying hurricanes by the intensity of their winds. Category 1 means that Noel is not causing damage to building structures, but can destroy mobile homes, trees, branches… The 2007 hurricane Humberto was Category 1 too. The history of giving names to hurricanes begins in 1953. Short male or female names are used for better orientation and differentiation between the cyclones. There are six lists of names in rotation, so the name Noel for a storm or a hurricane was last used in 2001. The names are changed only if the hurricane has made such damage any other use of its name will be inappropriate.
