Barroso´s commission waiting for final approval
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Jose Manuel Barroso and the second group of commissioners he assembled are waiting for the approval of members of European Parliament. Simple majority of MEPs is needed so that the Commission consisting of 26 commissioners can take the office. Barroso can count on the support from both the centre-right European People´s Party and the Liberal group. These two represent 349 potential votes out of 736 member Parliament. As far as the socialists are concerned only about dozen French members of the Socialists and Democrats group have officially expressed their rejection of the Commission´s line-up considering it not strong enough. The rest of the group that accounts f! or almost two hundred members will most probably support the new Commission. Others that would vote against due to their dissatisfaction with the quality and the structure of the new Commission are the Greens/European Free Alliance group and the European United Left. MEPs will be voting for or against the whole line-up, not individuals. However, they have ways to express their disapproval, like in case of Bulgaria´s original nominee Rumiana Jeleva. She was forced to withdraw due to controversy over her business affairs and rumors about her husband being connected to mafia. The EU Parliament is more than satisfied with the new Bulgaria candidate, World Bank vice president Kristalina Georgieva. EU High Representative for foreign affairs British Catherine Ashton is nominated for the post of the Commission´s vice president, Belgian Karel De Gucht as trade commissioner, Romanian Dacian Ciolos at agriculture. The main goal of the new Commission will be to deal with the ! economic crisis and boost the markets. "Over the next five yea! rs, I ho pe that this commission will play a key role in bringing Europe out of the crisis with a competitive economy which provides our citizens with sustainable growth and prosperity," Barroso said.
