Dependently independent?
by Kamila Moravcikova

On 17 February 2008 Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. Well, why don't let people from Kosovo enjoy the chance being independent? Not being tied anymore to the state whose government and especially its prime minister caused bloody conflicts and riot? Why they should be confederate to people who are not of the same religion and nationality? Why they should be stuck in state where they don't want to be any longer? Being from former Czechoslovakia, I know something about the desire to be independent, to let the whole world know that we don't need anybody, that we are self-sufficient. And on the contrary, once you are independent and all alone, you cannot accuse anybody for your misfortune, your bad results, not doing good, it's just up to you, your decision, your nation, there's no other one to be blamed. Actually, it seems that Kosovo is completely different story. In my opinion they deserve separateness if they feel uncomfortable in one state with Serbians. But one may ask whether the way they chose was the right one. Single sided action, self-declared independence without recognition of UN doesn't mean much formally. Moreover, the whole world turns its eyes to area of Kosovo and Serbia and waits and is afraid what's gonna be next. Can be this done without any fightings, violence, blood on the streets? Can be this smooth and uncomplicated, especially if there's a bloody history and permanent presence of UN's soldiers? Republic of Kosovo and its (at the moment) self-appointed officials await impatiently to receive international recognition from U.S., Japan and some European countries. On the other hand, Serbia's government still regards this area as an internal part of Serbia. So do China and Russia whose veto caused the repudiation by UN. People in Kosovo are celebrating today. Let's hope there will be reason to do so tomorrow.
