Zimbabwe under assault
by Claudia Sonea
Now, I usually say that we should mind our own business, but the truth is that sometimes we must step in. Yet, it is wrong to get involved into another country's business because history showed how countries managed to develop and solve things on their own- this being the only way. Looking at the present situation of Zimbabwe, we might feel tempted to say that someone ought to do something. But how can we be sure that it wouldn't make matters worse? President Robert Mugabe is controlling the country like a dictator and due to his latest actions it is thought he is hampering the elections in order to gain power. the United States, Britain, Germany and the human rights group Amnesty International is harshly criticizing the retaining of the leader of Zimbabwe's opposition, Morgan Tsvangirai, together with the party's vice president, Thokozane Kupe, and chairman, Lovemore during their campaign in towns north of Bulawayo. Morgan Tsvangirai managed to escape three assassinates attempts and he returned to Zimbawe for the runoff due to June 27. He sustained that there was no need for the runoff as the first round of the election was won by him and Mugabe falsified the results. Meantime Zimbabwe is facing a collapsing economy because of the fail of the agriculture suppressed by Mugabe. In addition the President went for violence and intimidation in order to keep the power. US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack expressed his disappointment for the Zimbabwean government behavior. Especially because it seems now even the aid agencies are being under restriction because they are thought to support the opposition. In this case I can't help wonder if someone should interfere or not. Although I am curios how in the world did he get the power as he doesn't seem to be able to gather his thoughts and utter them in an organized manner. It is like in the case of Burma and unfortunately it can't be helped.
