State of Fear
by Claudia Sonea
The word “Terrorism” comes from Latin and it has the meaning of to frighten. Although there is no clear definition for the word, usually it is used in a political context referring to political or foreign opposition. Originally it was used by Rome to describe a state of emergency, because of the attacks of Cimbri warriors. As it is, terrorism referred to those who were attacking a country with the purpose of tampering with its organizations. Why is it then that the members of the Taliban are considered to be terrorists? The Taliban’s acts of violence are despicable and the innocent victims will for! ever remain on their conscience because Allah just like God will not forgive unlawful murder, no matter what the mad leaders say. However, it is also true that they were provoked by the interfering in their internal organization. In all countries there were wars between tribes, internal fights for power for a very long period of time before they got to have a united and peaceful government, yet history shows that every time another country involved in the fights, the conflict grew instead of vanishing. So, why does the interfering taking place even nowadays, didn’t history teach anything? Apparently, world leaders have skipped history classes because they keep messing in to other people’s affairs. Afghanistan, Pakistan and all the other countries should have been left alone, to sort out their differences and get to a stable government on their own. USA has no right in getting involved in what happens in other countries, yet up to now! that happened frequently. In almost all the wars and all the ! conflict s between countries you hear on TV, the names of US, England, China, Russia are mentioned. I can’t say I am surprised that the Taliban launched attacks against US, England or any other country who didn’t mind its own business, while sparing other countries like Ukraine or Holland. The violence and murders of the members are despicable, but they are not the invaders, their purpose it is not to spread terror, but to punish, to revenge and to frighten and drive away the intruders. According to US official statements terrorism refers to violence and murders performed with the sole reason of inducing fear, to scare. It is therefore unjustified criminality and abusive behavior, which excludes the Taliban. Probably that is why most newspapers and even smart diplomats avoid using the term. In order to counter-balance the damages created by the stupidity of some countries, international organizations have been ! founded with the purpose of helping countries like Iraq or Afghanistan in the process of healing and reconstruction. The United Nations is one of those organizations and its projects managed to improve the situation in many countries, but in Afghanistan the organization faces many dangers and even lost members in attacks. It will face many more as long as leaders will not understand that the members are based in the country for a very long time, which leads to the questioning of the real reason why they are there and if they will indeed leave the country or will just follow US example in the case of Pearl Harbor.
