First time woman president elected
by Zivka Deleva

Last Sunday, 7th of February 2010, the presidential elections took place in Costa Rica. This country in Central America, a well established democracy is doing much better than its neighbors. Its economy mostly dependent on coffee growth, pineapples and tourism is noticing a 3% growth in 2010. Now former president Oscar Arias has developed good economic policy for the country and the newly elected president Laura Chinchilla has stated that she will continue implementing the same economic policies as her ancestor due to the fact that they proved to be benevolent and effective. Laura Chinchilla had the support of the former president Oscar Arias from the beginning of the ele! ction procedure. Due to the rules, the candidate that wants to take the place of the next president has to give up the public office at least one year earlier if he or she holds one. The same applied to Laura Chinchilla who resigned from the position of vice president and justice minister on October 8th 2008 so that she can run the primary elections within the National Liberation Party (PLN). Ms. Chinchilla received 46.8% of the votes, winning Sunday’s presidential elections in the first round. Her closest competition, left-leaning candidate Otton Soils, got only 25.1% of the votes. Taking the third position with not much of a difference in the percentage of votes (20.9%) was the Libertarian candidate Otto Guevara. “I couldn’t be happier” says Chinchilla fan Laura Urena, wrapped in a National Liberation Party flag at the victory celebration. “It’s the first time in the history of Costa Rica that we will have a woman president. It will! give new opportunities to women all over the country.” !
