Iran crushes opposition protests with violence
by Magdalena Rosova

A Tehran square was crowded with tens of thousands Iranians who gathered Thursday to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution. Unconfirmed reports say that clashes between opposition protesters and regime supporters had broke out. Website of the opposition Green Voice reported Thursday that police had fired tear gas and water cannons on anti-regime demonstrators. Other opposition reports say that thousands of protesters had turned out in the streets of Tehran. The clashes with security forces broke out when protesters gathered in Sadeghieh Square. Reformist opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi with his entourage were attacked on their way to Sadeghieh Squar! e. Karroubi's son was arrested. Iran's reformist former president, Mohammad Khatami, was attacked as well on his way to a rally. Opposition supporters say the had taken control over some parts of Tehran. These information is difficult to verify as Iranian government restricted the media coverage of today's events. The state is trying to inspire its supporters to counter the protesters themselves and to kill the opposition movement. Iranian leader traditionally use the celebration of Islamic revolution to show the world the massive support of the regime. This year is different as protesters keep rejecting re-election of president Ahmadinejed in poll in June 2009. In spite of the brutal repression, Mirhossein Mousavi and Karroubi, leaders of opposition movement, refused to give up their accusations of Ahmadinejed's fraud. According to Mousavi the Islamic revolution had failed and hadn't had achieve its goals. Instead, it brought tyranny and dictatorship to Iran. T! he opposition used internet social sites such as Facebook or T! witter a nd mobile phone text messaging as well to organise the rally and also to spread news and pictures.
