Ivory Coast to form a new government amidst the political crisis
by Zuzana Zelenakova
According to the official statement of the Ivory Coast president´s office the country´s Prime Minister Guillaume Soro will announce a new government on Tuesday. The previous government was dissolved by President Laurent Gbagbo on Friday together with electoral commission, which he accused of trying to add several hundreds of thousands voters to the electoral register illegally. Reportedly, most of these voters were from ethnic groups in the north and highly unlikely to support President Gbagbo in the elections. "I want a government that serves the interests of the Ivorian people and not the orders of political parties," said the president. "The mission of this n! ew government will be, under the authority of the president and the prime minister, to complete the final actions necessary to bring Ivory Coast out of its political crisis." The move is certain to postpone elections that were originally scheduled for March. The West African country is very much in need of the elections, which has already been postponed several times since 2005. The biggest cocoa producer in the world has been torn apart by a civil war for several years and the elections would be an important step to recovery. Many inhabitants of the country are worried about the outbreaks of violence as the opposition parties stated they no longer respect the authority of Laurent Gbagbo as a president and called on their supporters to protest in the streets. Opposition members accuse Gbagbo of deliberately trying to delay or prevent the election from taking place in order to stay in power. He was elected president in 2000 for a five year term and remained in power ever sin! ce always managing to defer the elections. The north of the c! ountry i s run by rebel New Forces since 2002. In 2007, the rebel forces and the president signed a peace treaty in Burkina Faso, which was supposed to pave way for unification of Ivory Coast.
