It's more than interesting to see the Europe dealing with the problem of independence within their countries. On one side European parliament fights so hard to persuade some of their members to accept Kosovo as a real and independent country, but on the other side, some of the states take away even historically established laws and rights. Last Saturday more than one million of Spanish people went to the streets of Catalonian region to show their disagreement with the recent statue of the region, challenged by a constitutional court last Friday. The court changed the term “nation” that was used for Catalonia. The term according the court had no legal value sinc! e the constitution knew only one nation and that was Spain in general. Catalonia with its capital and probably the most famous Spanish city, Barcelona had had the rights to affect their taxation system, judical system and immigration. Catalonia was also well known for its patriotism and nationalist-minded people. Their habits, cultures and the language was in some ways distant to the center of the country, dominated by Madrid and Castillian language. For Catalonians it may be a significant blow, since Spain seemed to be on the way of liberalization its regions. Few, the most known are Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque County and Galicia were always “historical nationalities”. Since then more regions have appeared (Aragon, Castilla, Leon or Valencian Community, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands). Spain has recognized also several levels of independence process. Some regions were granted as countries, historical nationalities, some as provinces or autonomies.
