Itinerant camps in France will be dismantled by Magdalena Rosova

French Interior Minister announced that half of the illegal Roma's traveling camps would be dismantled in period of three months. Everyone who breaks the law will be deported from France. The new law will affect Roma from Bulgaria and Romania the most. Ministers and President Nicolas Sarkozy decided so after series of violence between itinerant groups and police. Those itinerants who participated in the offences will be deportated to their countries of origin. Illegal camps where Roma communities live in are often sources of illicit trafficing, unacceptable living conditions, exploitation of children, prostitution or delinquency. France will try to get the situation under t! he control and therefore decided to cooporate with Romanian and Bulgarian police. Policemen from these countries should help French policemen in Paris in dealing with illegal camps. However, vice president of the French Human Rights League, Malik Salemkour, said that the announcement was scandalous and he accused the government from racist targeting. Salemkour also says government just wanted to avoid dealing with the underlying issues. The tension rose last week when Sarkozy condemned the behavior of about 50 travelling people and Roma who destructed police station. The rioters were protesting against the death of 22 year old boy who was shot by French police. Most of the rioters belonged to a nomadic comunity created by French nationals. Like Roma they decided for a nomadic lifestyle. They have French nationality and also permit to move freely around France. But this may change soon, Sarkozy is trying to regain ground on the issue of crime. Security was one of the main i! ssues in his presidential campaign in 2007.
