Europeans trying to get Chadian children to France face kidnapping allegations
by Corina Ciubotaru
The worst part of any war in any given time is that is harms innocent children. It's one thing to give your life to your country in the hope that by doing this you will make a difference and it's something else to grow up without knowing why your friends were killed in the middle of the night. The conflict in Darfur has already taken more than 200,000 lives and now it's turned into a humanitarian problem as 103 children were about to be taken from nearby Chad and given into foster care in France. The people in charge of flying them to Europe were arrested by Chadian authorities and are now being held without charges because it is believed the children are not orphans, as previously suggested. Although they claim the organisation they work for has done extensive research over eight weeks to determine whether the children had any living family, the UN officials in charge of the matter say that during interviews, 91 children said they had been living with at least one person they considered a parent. Most of them come from a region between Sudan and Chad, more specifically from the cities of Adre and Tine in Chad, and they are between one and ten years old. They are being taken care of by UNICEF, Red Cross and UNCHR staff, and they are in good health. UNICEF claims international adoptions should always be made with the best interest of the child in mind, and should not take place if the child has living relatives or caregivers.
