China mourning
by Claudia Sonea

The Olympic Games have faced many issues this year, but the worst one happened on May 12 when an earthquake hit China, the hosting country, and caused thousand of deaths. However, the government’s response and public manifestations were above expectations and a bound was created. Chinese troops were fighting a very bad weather for the first two days following the disaster and they rushed to solve issues created by it. All dams had been taken in consideration, especially the two-year-old Zipingpu dam. Thus Ministry of Water Resources released a notice to see whether reservoirs were affected or not, while 2,000 soldiers were sent to take care of the dam. For the activist group International Rivers Network this came as no surprise as they protested against the construction and safety of the dam. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake generated landslides, collapsed buildings and the officials said 26,000 people died and 1,405 were missing. The toll of death is expected to rise after the roads are cleared and they would have reached other towns in Wenchuan County. People's Liberation Army helicopters were used to perform flights to Wenchuan County and other areas affected to deliver food, medicine and tents. Hospitals were not well enough prepared for the disaster and the emergencies overwhelmed them. If until now focus was on criticizing China, after the disaster people are rethinking and use their energy and support to help the ones that lost everything and don’t have not even a roof above their head. God shows us what is important in this world and that we should never forget about love, help and understanding, that the fight is never a good approach.
