Laura Bush Speaks Out! Accusations Against Myanmar's Military Junta
by Milota Sidorova

Although rarely seen, as being an activist in political or humanitarian issues, the first lady of United States, Laura Bush has appeared at the White House briefing room podium. Moreover, she strictly accused Myanmar's military junta for failing to warn their citizen about huge cyclone. Weekend disaster, whose tolls record more than 15,000 deaths, from which 10,000 from single town, cracked down main rice-growing region, a home to about 24 million people, or let's say nearly half the country's population.Despite of global warning estimations, state media kept silence. People haven't been warned. The only urging media at that time were Radio Free Asia and Voice of America.Junta, just few days before planned constitutional referendum on Saturday has to deal with international blame equal to bloody masacre. Bush, who took the leadership towards aid policy to Myanmar promised to supply water, sanitation and shelter for Burma people. She also pointed out, that any assistention would go via United Nations or other international nongovernmental organization and hopes that junta will accept the aid."I hope that the military will realize they have to accept aid from everybody they can possibly accept it from. And maybe that will be the something good that can come out of this terrible destruction," she said about Myanmar anti-American policy. On one hand, the promise of humanitarian help should declare American concern about Burma people, on the other hand she tainted announced referendum as deliberated and given a false legitimacy. Bush made clear that, the very next Tuesday her husband will award Aung San Sui Kyi, an imprisoned democracy icon of Burma wih Congressional Gold Medal. Aung San Sui Kyi, the party leader has been arrested and put in house prison after her victory in 1990. Junta turned down the elections and Kyi has been under control last 12 years."If it proceeds under current conditions, the constitutional referendum they have planned should not be seen as a step toward freedom, but rather as a confirmation of the unacceptable status quo," commented Bush during her public appearance.
