Myanmar death toll could top 10,000, foreign minister says
by Radka Konkolova

The Saturday morning brought a huge surprise for Southeast Asian people. The Burma citizens were not prepare enough for such a matter. Tropical Cyclone Nargis came and as it seems, it was the largest and the strongest cyclone since the 2004's tsunami. It might be even more destructive than the tsunami four years ago was. The consequences can be worse too and it is because of limited amount of the rescuers and also because the government permits the aid only from some international organizations. Deputies of almost all international rescue agencies have claimed that they are prepared to provide help to all stricken areas, but they are only waiting for the permission from the Myanmar government's side.
Many people from this area lost their homes or even lives within a few minutes. I think it must be very difficult for such people. Now they are in need, because they have almost nothing. They just have to be happy that they are alive. But plenty of them lost their families, loved persons and jobs as well thanks to this element and government, which hadn't informed and warned people about the strength and severity of this disaster. In Myanmar, they have got inadequate warning system and houses there have got poor stability because they are built from bamboo and have thatch roofs. So it is not difficult to a bit stronger wind to pull them down. But the Saturday's wind reached about 120 mph. The government has supposed that more than 10 000 people could be dead and the hundreds or thousands of others have stayed without shelters, electricity and mainly without the clean water and food.
In addition the weather there is still against the people. It is getting warmer there, so there are very good conditions for mosquito and various epidemics. Organizations, which are allowed to provide a help to this country are trying to assure clean and fresh water, rice, some shelters and clothes and medicine and nets against the mosquito and insects to these people in need. One part of survivals are moved for some time to the Buddhist monasteries. So they have to take part on this together and help each other to get things better.
