Ehud Olmert survives no-confidence motions
by Petra Kamenicka
Prime Minister of Israeli, Ehud Olmert and his government survived on Monday three no-confidence motions in Israeli’s parliament. Monday’s voting was boycotted by a key member of his coalition.
One of three motions saw a majority voting against his government. This has happened for the first time since he took his office two years ago. This motion was approved by 41 votes to 40 votes. Situation was a result of shunning the vote by Olmert’s Shas coalition partner. Politicians from coalition party, the Orthodox Jewish party Shas boycotted the vote. As local media proclaimed the reason for this step was a protest of the appointment of politician from the Labor Party as head of parliament’s Finance Committee.
This was a surprising situation, but it did not threat Olmert’s government, because according to Israeli’s law, 61 votes are needed to pass no-confidence motion. Passing no-confidence motion also leads to dissolution of parliament, that has 120 members and to arranging a new elections.
Ehnud Olmert has other problems too. He is under police investigation. He is accused of taking bribes from an American Jewish businessman. U.S entrepreneur Morris Talansky testified, that he had given $150.000 to Olmert, who was a Jerusalem mayor, over 15 years. Israeli Prime Minister denied any criminal activities, but he also announced that he would step down in case of indication. The result of motion vote cast doubt on whether Olmert would survive a current police investigation.
He is a member of Kadima party, which is planning in September an internal vote that could replace him.
