by Petra Kamenicka
Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S military contractors were rescued form a capture of Colombian rebels.
This significant success was achieved thanks to artful deception and also five-yeas lasting close co-operation of U.S and Colombia. This successful cooperation led to destroying of capability of captors to communicate. Operation, known as “Allinace” started in 2003, just several weeks after the Americans' surveillance plane crashed in area of Southern Colombian jungle. The moment, that started this operation was a satellite call made by Nancy Conde. Nancy Conde was the regional finance and supply chief in Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia known as FARC. She was calling to their confederates in Miami, in order to see if they can supply the rebels with satellite phones. And exactly this phone call was being listened by state security agents. The U.S. agents, together with Colombian agents intercepted more than 5000 rebel phone calls. First arresting has begun in 2006 included for instance Jose Maria Corredor, who allegedly shipped in hundreds of assault rifles from Venezuela. He exchanged them for cocaine.
One of three freed American hostages, Marc Gonsalves on Monday, that their captors were terrorists with capital T. Marc Gonsalves was held by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia for more than five years. He said, that FARC refuses to acknowledge democracy and human rights, they use revolution as a justification for criminal activity. Gonsalves adds: ,,I want to send a message to the FARC.FARC, you guys are terrorists. You deny that you are, you say with words that you are not terrorists, but your words don't have any value. Don't tell us that you're not terrorists, show us that you;re not terrorists.” Another two freed American hostages are Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell. After they were freed, they had a welcoming ceremony, where smiles and hugs between them and their families were endless.
