Zimbabwe's exercise in self-delusion
by Barbora Misakova
In some cases I really want to believe, that justice will win. That people around the world could freely profess the religion they want, use the language they want, vote freely that person they think has the right abilities to administrate and protect their country and their families. But then I have to wake up from dreaming and realize the fact. Reality is much more distant from all those unrealistic views of mine. People are fighting, they are killing each other in absurd wars and they think it will help and solve the problem. The truth is, the problems will never be solved in violent way. Never. They can be just forced for a while.
By the way do you know who is the new Zimbabwean president? If you thought that finally could win someone new, fresh and young who could maybe help to South Africa to put on its legs again & you were wrong. Robert Mugabe, 84-year-old Zimbabwe's leader from 1980, won Friday's presidential runoff and so became president. But the whole big victory wasn't so clean as it should. I don't know why, but I was really disappointed and surprised. Maybe I am really too naive when I thought this time it will be different. As the information sources say, the whole elections were marred by violence and intimidation. Mugabe's supporters were forcing other residents to vote for Mugabe and more than 80 dead and 200,000 residents forced to flee their homes are the results of their excessive ambition.
Also the results are strange. While Mugabe's rival Tsvangirai had won the most votes in the first round of presidential voting, this time the electoral commission said that Mugabe got more than 2 million votes. Even more interesting is that more than 130,000 ballots had been defaced or spoiled in other way what is a sign, that lot of people would rather spoil their vote than to give it to wrong person. Tsvangirai thinks that the whole inauguration was meaningless and considers it as an "exercise in self-delusion".
