Who is actually endangered?
by Barbora Misakova
Situation in Afghanistan is not rose-colored at all. Constant protests, unfailing waves of violence, bomb attacks are the common problems. I am asking myself, what is worse – live in or govern such a country? Suicide bomb attack, which happened on Saturday, killed seven people. Another suicide attack killed one NATO soldier (whose nationality is unknown) on Tuesday. Tomorrow should be one of the most important days in the Afghanistan’s history. More than 15 million Afghans confirmed their turnout on the elections, what means that in 30 million Afghanistan it is absolute majority. But will they really come in such great number? Afghanistan has to face more proble! ms than just Taliban: political divisions, ethnic tension, unemployment, corruption. It is not nice picture at all, but when one really wants, he can change anything. But now the question is, if people have enough courage. After all, promise personal turnout on the elections is one thing. Go out on the street, where you risk to be killed “only” for giving the voice to your candidate is another, especially when you have a family. The Foreign Ministry asked news organizations to avoid broadcasting about violence incidents on Election Day just not to terrify potential voters. While the English version of this statement was requesting, the version in the Afghan language was any broadcasting strictly forbidding. Even though no penalties were specified, Afghan news organizations wouldn’t follow this statement even if they were, as it would be an unreasonable violation of press freedoms. What is more, who would be responsible for the next attack? Would it be gov! ernment, journalists or soldiers? Although NATO promised that ! their mo re than 100,000 international troops will be on Election Day protecting voters, it doesn’t automatically mean there won’t be another death toll.
