The world’s largest reef system composed of almost 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands is endangered. A Chinese coal ship run aground it this Australia’s environmentally sensitive area called Great Barrier Reef. The ship is leaking oil and there is a danger it will break up. This world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms which can be seen from outer space is stretching for over 2,600 kilometers. Now the boat which is “completely damaged on the port side” as Patrick Quirk, general manager of Maritime Safety Queensland informed, is threatening this Australia’s biggest tourist attractions and one of the world’s natur! al wonders. While workers on the ship are doing their best to stabilize the situation, Australian authorities are asking what this boat is doing in a restricted zone of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park – zones that are off limits to shipping. Maritime Safety Queensland informed there is only small volumes of oil seen in the water and the oil spill measures approximately three kilometers by 100 meters that should not be danger. As the Great Barrier Reef supports a diversity of life and any kind of hesitation could destroy them authorities decided to spray chemical dispersant anyway. But this incident is not the first one and probably not even the last one. Apart from shipping and pollution connected with it there are also climate changes and toxic farm chemicals that endanger this reef. The Great Barrier Reef is not important only from the economical point of view, but also from the cultural and spiritual as well. That’s why the cases like this should never rep! eat again.
