Why did people stray from the church, from its canons? The answer is never simple and depends on multiple factors. Most often people confess losing their trust in the church representatives and that they prefer praying in the intimacy of their own homes. The church is still seen as God’s temple, but there is a strong belief that the priests and other clerks are desecrating it. Our pastors should be role models, they should be an example for the church goers, for those sheep straying from religion. However, on numerous occasions, they not only failed our expectations, but proved to be negative models. The Catholic Church and its whol! e organization are perfect examples of how God’s representatives have lost morality, as well as sanity. After discovering awful secrets about the Popes and their love affairs, now Christians all over the world are outraged by the paedophilia scandal that surrounds the Vatican. Looking back in history, the Vatican has undergone scandals and controversies: Pope John XII was accused of murder and was famous for having multiple mistresses; Pope Alexander VI had a mistress with whom he had three sons and a daughter; Pope Benedict IX led an extremely immoral life. Various scandals surround the nuns and the skeleton of babies found in abandoned church wells after World War II, the collapse of Banco Ambrosiano and there is also a controversial claim that Pope John Paul I had been murdered after starting to steal money from the Vatican Bank. Nowadays, people are shivering in disgust at the thought that children have been the victims! of those men who should have thought them the values of Chris! tianity. Since 2001 the Roman Catholic Church has suffered great scrutiny over the sexual abuse of minors by priests and the cover-up of those crimes by bishops. However, the horrendous deeds date much further back in history and more than 4,700 priests since 1950 have resigned or have been defrocked. Bernard Francis Law, Cardinal and Archbishop of Boston, Massachusetts, United States had to resign after they have been exposed for covering up the horrific acts of some child raping priests. Pope Benedict XVI was seen as a very traditionalist and conservator pontiff who spurred aborting, gay marriages and who preached a return to the old religious rites. Now, he is being criticised for covering up the awful deeds of priests who were under investigation for child molestation. He did not comment on the matter, but there is no secret that in the past few months he held meetings with bishops to deal with the allegations of sex abuse.
