Iraq's Corrupted Elections
by Claudia Sonea

Let the democracy begin…in a country torn by wars, the democracy brings a breath of fresh air. However, because in a democratic state, the power is tricky and supposes the election of the leader, the fresh air is being contaminated by the stench of greed. Iraq is starting to recover after the US invaded the country in 2003. In June last year, Bush withdrew the troops from Baghdad and gradually the civilian death toll fell to its lowest level. A first step towards a political stable organization was the 2005 Constitution which 63% Iraqis voted, then the election of a government. As a final step towards self-determination and indep! endence, on 7 March 2010 was held the parliamentary election which decided who were the 325 members that would choose the Prime Minister of Iraq and the President of Iraq. However, the beatitude of the moment was spoilt by the greed for power. Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki would not accept the result of the election because he was not victorious and his coalition managed to be only the second largest grouping with 89 seats. He requested a manual recount of some of the ballots cast in Baghdad due to the fact that some polling centres were violated. Instead of working together towards a stable government for a country that suffered greatly, the politicians are already jumping to each others’ throats in a race for the highest piece of the stake. Of course, that the politic instability could lead towards civilian unrest and a return to violence, but that has no importance whatsoever because they could still be leaders of nothing. ! Someone should draw Iraqis politicians the ! attentio n upon the fact that in order to rule, you must first have a country to rule over, otherwise it’s just pointless. Let us hope that democracy will not be again the cause of a set back and a return towards the chaos that dominated the country.
