Increased fuel prices enraged India
by Zivka Deleva
It is not the best thing to go to India at the moment and try to circulate through the traffic. It would be complicated to walk, and not even to think of taking a taxi or driving your own car. Forget that! The government of the country decided that a good thing that should be done for some money to be collected in the Treasure so the budget deficit would be smaller, is to increase the fuel prices. But, India people don't agree that easily with this measure and became violent. Throughout the whole country there are strikes that make the traffic difficult. Riots burn buses and hit with stones wherever they get. The strike was organized by the oppositionist Hindu-nationalist B! haratiya Janata Party. Almost all the bigger companies in the financial center Mumbai were shut down. Air traffic was as well worsened with a lot of flights cancelled these days. India is the third largest economy in Asia and the Congress party has a plan to create a lot of financial reforms. The police wasn't very successful in the intention to stop the protests, but couldn't make it at all the places, because the protesters were massive and sometimes very violent. "This is a case where the opposition has come together on an immediate issue, but it doesn't mean this will bring pressure on the government to rollback the hike in petrol prices. The need for fiscal prudence is far greater than populism and the government understands that" - said D.H. Pai Panandikar, head of private think tank RPG Foundation. According to some estimation, the business sector has lost more than 640 million dollars due to the strike. And that is a lot of money in the country where millions! are poor.
