US consulate under fire
by Claudia Sonea
US is constantly the target of terrorists, no matter if it's upon the country's territory or the things related to it like the consulates. That happened on July 9 when US consulate in Istanbul was targeted by four armed terrorists who did not succeeded in their attempt thanks to the bravery of police officers who stopped them.
Dogan news agency gave details on the shooting revealing that US security officers had to withdraw inside the consulate as they are not authorized to open fire. Also a security camera showed that four men with shotguns came out from a car and shot a traffic policeman then headed for the US guard post. The brave Turkish policemen stepped in and managed to kill three of the terrorist. Unfortunately also three officers lost their lives; another one was injured as well as a driver of a vehicle. One of the terrorist managed to escape and now is on the run. Rumor has it that the terrorist's car is full of explosives.
The U.S. ambassador to Turkey, Ross Wilson, stated that he is grateful for the prompt actions of the Turkish police force and that he is confident in the partnership between the two countries. Sharon Wiener, the consul general in Turkey, assured that all members of the consulate are safe and sound, while Turkey's foreign ministry revealed that all American diplomats and consulate in Turkey had their security increased. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also presented her gratitude towards those who lost their lives and she added that she will see who was responsible for the attack. At this point police would not expose anything so that the investigation wouldn't be jeopardized, according to the Interior Minister Besir Atalay.
This attack follows the one in 2003 that generated the construction of the consulate on a hill in Istinye- talking about irony. Oh well, this is a lesson to be remembered and let us not forget those who died serving and protecting, may God rest their souls.
