Georgia vs. Russia
by Livia Cseresova
A big ally of the United States, Georgia, unexpectedly offended the crush separatists. After that, on Friday, Russia sent an armored column into South Ossetia. Hundreds of civilians were killed, according to witnesses.
Interior ministry of Georgia claims, that three Georgian military bases and key facilities for shipping oil to the West were attacked by warplanes.
The capital city of south Ossetia, Tskhinvali, was completely destroyed by fighting, which might ignite a wider war between Russia and Georgia. According to the latter, it was forced to start the fight because of rebel attacks.
What's interesting is that the struggle started just when the whole world's attention was concentrated on the beginning of the Beijing Olympics.
The president of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili might have been awaiting the fight to start to control South Ossetia again. The rebels are trying to unite with North Ossetia, which is actually a part of Russia. Saakashvili believes that exactly Russia is the aggressor.
Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of United States urged Russia to stop attacks and remove its forces from the territory of Georgia. As Rice said, the United States only wants Russia to respect the sovereignty of Georgia and agree to international mediation.
Eduard Kokoity, who is the leader of South Ossetia's rebel government, said that approximately 1,400 people were killed in the attack.
Nobody knows for sure what may possibly convince Russia or Georgia to stop the assassination, since both of them claim the war started after violating the cease-fire by the other side. The cease-fire had only been announced a few hours before the attacks after some time of irregular fights.
Matthew Bryza, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the United States was sent by the State to try to end the violence. This was actually the worst outbreak of aggression since the province got real independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992.
