Syria and Lebanon agree to establish diplomatic ties
by Magdalena Rosova
For the first time Syria and Lebanon agreed to establish diplomatic relations Wednesday, first step to heal tension.
Many have seen Damascus´ refusal of ties as it still considers small state in neighborhood part of Syrian territory which they want to control. Therefore ties mean for Lebanon a significant symbol, Syria considers them independent state.
However, Syria agreed only after its influence in Lebanon was assured by creation that gives Damascus-allied Hezbollah a strong power in Lebanese decision-making.
Still, it will take a long time easing three years crisis in Lebanon, where pro-Western and pro-Syrian factions fought for power and the country was close to civil war.
For almost 30 years Syria controlled Lebanon, after their army entered the country as peacekeepers during the civil war in 1975-90. Their rule was broke in 2005 when ex-Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri was killed and people’s resistance forced Syrian troops to leave. Syria denies any affiliations with Hariri’s death.
Countries have decided to open embassies in each another’s capitals during Lebanese President Michel Suleiman visit in Syria. Suleiman and Syrian President Bashar Assad have not decided on date for opening the embassies yet. The United States welcomed the news but say Syria to stay out of Lebanese affairs.
Many Lebanese lawmakers want the border with Syria to be formally demarcated. Suleiman and Assad have already discussed this issue.
After the guarantee of Hezbollah’s power, the factions decided to elect Suleiman as a president and to form government, where Hezbollah has enough Cabinet. The new government was approved by parliament Tuesday.
