Israeli premier to resign
by Livia Cseresova
Israeli premier Ehud Olmert, the successor of Ariel Sharon, has been in this function since January 2006. Now, after more than 2 and half years, he announced he will resign in September. The announcement came after corruption allegations and declining popularity amongst the people.
Olmert will not run in primary election of his party on September 17th and right after the election he will step down and let his successor to create a new government. However, because of political system of Israel, he can possibly stay in function a part of next year also.
As mentioned, Olmert popularity is dropping. It even dropped below 20 percent at one point. Allegations of corruption and his war in Lebanon do not help this, either.
Olmert’s resignation was predicted, mainly because of negative news about him. The worst ones focus on Morris Talansky, who is a 76-year-old American Jewish businessman. He said he handed envelopes stuffed with thousands of dollars to Olmert before becoming a prime minister, what helped him finance his luxurious lifestyle.
Also, Olmert was alleged of double and triple billed trips abroad to Jewish institutions, financing trips for relatives, shady real estate deal and others – all before he became a premier.
Olmert said: “I was forced to defend myself against relentless attacks from self-appointed 'fighters for justice' who sought to depose me from my position, when the ends sanctified all the means."
So Israel will have a new prime minister soon. Main candidates in Olmert’s party are Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz.
If Livni became prime minister, she would become the second female premier in Israeli history.
Resignation of Olmert might change Israel’s current relations with USA, Syria or Palestine. But Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki said it wouldn‘t change much. On the other hand, Israeli political analyst Yossi Alpher said Olmert's resignation would at least slow the process. And the U.S. president G. Bush called Olmert to promise further cooperation.
On Wednesday, Olmert said “Did I make mistakes over my political career? Without a doubt, yes, and I regret them and I am sorry. But is the real picture that which is presented to the public? Absolutely not. “
