Karadzic hid in plain view to elude capture
by Michaela Vargova
BELGRADE, Serbia - Life on the run of Radovan Karadzic, the world's most-wanted war crimes fugitive, ended abruptly with his capture Monday. Karadzic is accused of genocide for masterminding the bloody siege of Sarajevo and the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica. That act is considered to be Europe's worst carnage since the end of World War II.
For more than a decade Karadzic demonstrated a talent for eluding international justice. He transformed himself from a leader recognizable by his famous hair into a man with a white beard and black robe. Simply said, he hid himself in plain sight. Karadzic's disguise was so efficient that he could walk absolutly freely around town without being noticed. With regard to that fact, the former Bosnian Serb strongman could work as a doctor and psychiatrist at an alternative medicine clinic in Belgrade during his whole life on the run without being even suspected. Many observers have long suspected that recently fallen prime minister Kostunica, had shielded him from arrest. Karadzic's whereabouts had been a mystery since he went on the run in 1998.
As mentioned sooner, that life on the run ended unexpectedly with Karadzic's capture Monday 21st July. Credit of an arrest is ascribing to a new pro-Western government that tightened the dragnet around the war crimes suspect. But few in Serbia failed to link the capture to the recent establishment of a pro-Western government committed to bringing Serbia into the European Union, which has been demanding the handover of war criminals.
Now, it is submitted Karadzic's capture has broad political implications - for the future of the U.N. war crimes tribunal, eventual closure of the cycle of Balkan blood feuds and for Serbia's fitful journey out of international isolation. EU officials said Tuesday the arrest would boost Serbia's EU prospects.
Under the U.N. indictment, Karadzic faces 11 counts of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and other atrocities committed between 1992 to 1996.
