Storm "Xynthia" devastated France and neighboring countries

France is mourning after the storm “Xynthia” hit on Sunday in the town of L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer and and killed at least 50 and eight people are missing. Rescuers are still looking for more bodies and the French Government announced national emergency. France is the worst hit and another 10 people were killed in other countries, like Germany, Spain, Portugal and Belgium. Since 1999, there hasn’t been such a storm in France. The bad occasion is that the storm hit at night and that’s why the consequences are bigger. More than 170.000 homes stayed without power at the storm battered coast and a lot of roads along the Atlantic coast have been destroyed, d! ue to the strong winds and torrential rains. "It's obvious that if this had happened during the day, the death toll would not have been disastrous, because people were taken by surprise during their sleep," said the Minister of the Interior, Brice Hortefeux. Sarkozy called this catastrophe “a human tragedy with a dreadful toll”. The state is giving three million euros to the funds for the victims. The EU is interested in offering the support for the affected countries. Lot’s of farms and fisheries were hit very hard and Agriculture Minister Bruno Le Marie promised compensation from a national disaster relief fund. It is a little bit weird how comes today houses can be so easily flooded, it is questioned whether some of them don’t have the adequate construction permits. "We have to ask ourselves how in France in the 21st century families can be surprised in their sleep and die, drowned in their homes”, asks Sarkozy. Around quarter of flight ! were as well cancelled on Sunday, but the air traffic was soon! returne d to normal at Charles de Gaulle airport.
