France tries to settle down with Rwanda, if possible
by Zivka Deleva
After 16 years of vacuum in the diplomacy between France and Rwanda, today President Nicolas Sarkozy visited his colleague Paul Kagame. His aim was to spend only few hours in a symbolic meeting in Rwanda capital Kigali and try to reduce the acrimony that was created through the years. Still, no matter how symbolic this visit is, the heaviness that their relation brings, overhangs in the air. The political cooperation was stopped in 2006, when French judge accused President Kagame of involvement in the assassination of former President Juvenal Habyarimana. That moment provoked the terrifying genocide in Rwanda. Kagame led the Tutsi rebels who took power and ended the genocid! e. According to him, the plane was shot down by Hutu extremists in order to justify the killings. In 2006, the Land of a thousand hills as Rwanda is known, returned with another accusation toward France, in which reports say that French officials have trained and armed the Hutu extremists who killed some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis. And what a hypocricy, today Sarkozy and Kagame are going to visit a memorial dedicated to the victims of the same genocide! It is obvious that the biggest reason why France is so into the thawing of the relation with Rwanda, definitely is the admission of Rwanda to the Commonwealth, in October, 2008. Since then, the President of the former Francophone country, Kagame held his speeches in English. Children already started learning in English, it is notable that the cricket which is not a specific Francophone countries game, has become very popular sport. Even the specific left side driving for the Anglo-Saxon countries, can be already seen. No matter! to which reach country Rwanda is leaning to, still the countr! y must f ind a solution for it’s nearly 60 percents poverty.
