Uzbeks flee Kyrgyzstan, seek safety at border
by Magdalena Rosova
After deadly attacks against ethnic Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan has shut its border. The United Nations demanded the creation of a humanitarian corridor to deliver aid for the victims. The attacks around Kyrgyzstan's cities Osh and Jalalabad brought death to 170 people and 1,762 people were wounded. The attacks were aimed on ethnic Uzbeks and Tajiks. Thousands of them have flooded to Uzbekistan. According to Uzbekistan, the country has already received 100,000 refugees and there are still more of them waiting at the border. The refugees said that the Kyrgyz government forces had been helping the gangs in the attacks. UN political affairs chief Lynn Pascoe called on Mon! day for the creation of a corridor so that humanitarian aid could be delivered to the country. The slaughter started Friday in Osh, when Kyrgyz gangs attacked shops and homes of ethnic Uzbeks. The incident happened only two months after former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was thrown down in an uprising. After the deadly attacks, streets in the Uzbek districts in Osh were full of dead bodies and the houses were in fire. The tension between the ethnic groups grew and everybody is afraid that the violence could start again. The pogrom affected mainly ethnic Uzbeks, including children. Many cases of rapes were reported as well. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay thinks that the attacks had been well planned and targeted. Uzbekistan closed the border with Kyrgyzstan saying it the country had no more place to accommodate the refugees. Prime Minister Abdullah Aripov said they need more help from outside to accept more refugees.
