Rare video of al Qaeda fighters
by Magdalena Rosova

New interesting video cassette was found and it shows daily live of Islamist militants connected with al Qaeda living in northern Africa. Video shows militants in Sahel desert, they are training young recruits and there are many scenes of their daily lives. The cassette was found on one defector, who tried to escape but was stopped by security personnel. The video was shot somewhere in the Sahel, it is a huge region that divides the Sahara desert and the Sudanian savannas. It is not clear where exactly the group was staying. The video is not dated and it is not clear which country it was taken in. Thanks to video we can see the ordinary live of Islamist militants. The video! shows them doing their daily chores , playing or just being bored. It seems there was no specific reason to shoot such video. Not many men in the video are armed. Until now the public has only seen the videos of covered Islamist militants making threats to the West. In the video there is a man reading the Koran and the other one listening to the radio. Many men are very young, just teenagers. They speak with many different accents which means they come from several countries. Some are Algerian, Moroccan, Mauritanian and some others. Militants also use video camera to take pictures of themselves for creating ID photos for fake documents. Men in the video also do wrestling, but it looks more fun than cruel drill. One of the men was identified as Mokhtar Benmokhtar, a prominent AQIM leader. He is nicknamed Laâouar, or “the blind” in Arabic.
