Polish martyr Popieluszko beatified in Warsaw by Magdalena Rosova

Roman Catholic Church has beatified a Jerzy Popieluszko, a charismatic priest and opposition activist that was murdered by communist secret police KGB 25 years ago. The beatification took place at Warsaw's Pilsudski Square on Sunday. More than 150,000 believers came to see the beatification mass. About 100 bishops also attended the mass and archbishop Angelo Amato, the Vatican's prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, came to represent Pope Benedict XVI. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Jerzy Buzek, the head of the European Parliament, were present as well. In spite of that Benedict was not in Warsaw he paid tribute to Popieluszko in Cyprus where he has! been on a landmark visit. "May his example and his intercession fire the enthusiasm of the priesthood and fill the faithful with love," Benedict said in his speech in Polish. He also stated that Popieluszko's martyrdom was a great victory of good over evil. The beatification ceremony started early in the morning in the symbolic Pilsudski Square, where in 1979 Polish pope John Paul II celebrated a historic mass in then communist Poland. For Polish Popieluszko is a hero, because he was not afraid of death and spoke openly about the wrongs of the regime. After the mass, relics of Popieluszko were laid at the Temple of Divine Providence in the Warsaw's suburb. Popieluszko's mother, 100, said that it was a great joy to see the beatification of her son. Reporters asked her how had she brought up such a great son. Her answer was: "Love people, Love God, with all your heart."
