George Clooney is a United Nations messenger
by Daniela Simkova

George Clooney became a United Nations messenger of peace. He was supposed to present his message of peace in Sudan's Darfur, but unfortunately he was blocked from the speech. Some diplomats think that his presence in Darfur is of no importance.Clooney delivered his message through the news conference. He thinks that the message is the most important fact in this world. George Clooney said that this message is what people watch and that this fact ensures no fail in human believes. "Millions are homeless, not from famine or disease or acts of God, but from a well armed militia intent on ridding the land of its people," said George Clooney. The actor raised money for refugees through the charity and pointed at the crisis in Darfur. He said that people don't want to see much violence in the world, they tend not to see everything that is happening in the world. "It seems as if at times celebrity can bring that focus. It can't make the policies, it can't change people's minds really, but you can bring a camera where you go because they'll follow you and you can shine a light on it. That seems to be my job."There are several more famous people who are messengers for the U.N., they are for instance Michael Douglas, Paulo Coelho, Jane Goodall and many more.

Borders and hunger
by Barbora Misakova

Borders, nations, states, religions & we are all divided according to these classes. Instead of being free people and trying to understand every culture and every living creature we are constantly fighting against each other. "Hey! You mustn't come in this way! It is my land!" Sometimes it makes me crazy when I realize it is truth and this is really going on. We are still reading new articles about Gaza and all those conflicts connected to it, but honestly I am a bit confused. These days its all about blockades between Egypt and Palestine & while Egyptian forces used cement and sandbags to seal gaps Hamas militants blasted it tonight and so enabled thousands of Gazans go through Egypt's territory. Imagine you are living in a small territory controlled by someone else, you have nothing to eat and your relatives are dying because of absence of medicaments. I don't want to apologize them, but when are people desperate, they have no food and other needed goods what can we expect? There is no surprise Palestinian civilians are doing anything to get so much needed food and some sources say there are more than 50,000 Palestinians who crossed the borders and entered into Egypt's area, and still another 20,000 people are waiting in Rafah. Although this massive kind of riots lead to big exodus Egyptian police reinforcements didn't take any negative and violent steps. On the other hand they had to arrest 15 Hamas militants who tried to cross Egyptian territory with weapons and explosives despite warnings. Although Tel Aviv finally allowed fuel delivery to one power station in Gaza Strip and also supplies of gas, food and medicaments, the absence of the most needed raw materials will stay for longer time.

Carnivals
by Zuzana Valkova

As a small child I loved all the carnivals and masquerades. It was so exciting. Later I found that it's not only a "party thing", but it has a long tradition in almost whole Europe and America.Carnival is a festival season. It's happening usually during the February, sometimes during the March. First day of the Carnival is 12 days after the Christmas, on January 6, and the last one is called Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. This is the day before Ash Wednesday. Its 47 days before Eastern. During the carnival people are celebrating, dancing and drinking, there are parades on the streets. Special balls are prepared, lots of people are wearing masks and costumes.I already said that carnivals are traditions. Because before Eastern there are 40 days of Lent, people wanted to use this opportunity and celebrate the last days before it. They had to prepare for the next 40 days without meat and alcohol. But it was like this in the past. Nowadays, most of the people don't care about traditions like Lent, but they still strongly care about the carnivals and parades. Most famous carnival in Europe is the Venice carnival in Italy. Almost everyone in this magic historical city is dressed in costumes or at least in a mask and celebrates. Many tourists from abroad come to Venice only because of this.In America is the most famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Main parts of this carnival are big parades with samba dance schools and half naked dancers.Almost every country has different traditions, but the reason is the same everywhere.

China's Water Supplies are in Danger
by Zuzana Moravcova

More than 60,000 people in Beijing, China, had to be using emergency water sources, rely on bottles of water and limited underground water, after officials discovered Sunday that the Dongjing River, part of a major river system in central China, was red and bubbly. Gao Qijin, head of the water company in Xingou township, said they immediately stopped drawing water from the polluted river. The authorities were forced to close schools and cut water supplies to only 200,000 people, which led to final number of five schools that were closed, while the open ones were not able to provide food to their students. But what is the source of the unpredicted pollution? Unfortunately, it has not been determined, and an investigation is going on. Tests showed the pollution was caused mainly by metal cleaning, tanning and bleaching, that produces chemicals such as nitrogen, ammonia and permanganate. These chemicals were proved to be contained in the water on a high level, Xinhua said. The pollutants are supposed to be flushed out of the river, after local officials closed a gate linking the Hanjiang River to the tributaries. Meanwhile, they are using water from the nearby Changhu Lake. We believe the river pollution to be only a temporary problem. However, more significant problem, that is worrying the inhabitants, remains & it is the long-term deprivation of water, as the rainfall has been below world average since 1999, lower than in Israel. The city is draining surrounding regions, depriving poor farmers, who have been ordered to grow only corn, because it requires less water. The city of Beijing is 90 miles from the sea, which is one of the reasons it has had water problems for more than a millennium. Moreover, due to rapid development in recent decades, intensive agriculture and wealthier lifestyles have drawn down and polluted the city's water supply. "Very few people used toilets in the 1950s, but right now everyone uses toilets, uses showers, uses swimming pools, and fancy buildings use lots of water,"said Dai Qing, a former journalist who turned China's prominent environmental campaigner. "We don't have water but no one mentions it, all the policy makers never mention that, just develop, develop," he added.

Pending missile deal
by Claudia Sonea

Shall they sign? Who knows, but both US President George W. Bush and Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said Wednesday they are about to reach an agreement on a radar for a planned US missile shield that has angered Russia. Furthermore, Topolanek stated that they are just three words away from signing. On Tuesday Bush and Topolanek already signed an accord that could help secure visa-free travel for Czech citizens to the United States later this year, but also it stirred concerns for UE because the document could set a precedent, and impose new security restrictions on US-bound travellers beyond those agreed between Brussels and Washington. Also the memorandum could see Prague hand over information about air travellers who are simply flying over US territory. After the two political personalities mentioned above met in the Oval Office through an interpreter, the Czech Prime Minister revealed that the details are very important and that sometimes a word might lead to its annulment. The American side wishes to deploy a missile defense radar in the Czech Republic and house 10 interceptor missiles in Poland (who meets March 10 with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk) by 2012 as part of a missile shield he says will defend the United States and its allies from "rogue" states like Iran. This being seen by Russia like a threat to its security harking back to the Cold War, and have aroused some domestic opposition in the Czech Republic, although Bush confesses that it is not an anti-Russian system. The Czech side wants for environmental protection to be guaranteed and that is why the environmental guidelines for any US presence in his country are stalling the signing. Moreover, they are opposing the idea of hosting Russian observers, proposed by Bush as part of a confidence-building plan to ease Moscow's concerns. What will happen next? Well, Topolanek says there will be definitely a signing.

Is this Peter?
by Claudia Sonea

Some love stories never die. When the Nazis occupied the Netherlands and began deporting Jews to the death camps in 1942 everything looked like hell broke loose on Earth and for families like Anne Franck's all that was left was hope. From Anne's diary we find out that love has survived too. Everyone remembers the boy with the "beautiful brown eyes" who she recalled as her "one true love" and now thanks to Ernst Michaelis we can even see. No one has ever seen the photography of Peter, "the ideal boy", but his former childhood friend Ernst Michaelis who realized after rereading Anne's diary recently and contacted Amsterdam museum, according to a spokeswoman's statement on Tuesday. Anne Frank museum will display the photo of Peter Schiff giving shape to the unknown character In 1933 the Francks fled from Germany to Amsterdam and during World War Two they had to go into hiding from where Anne wrote her diary recording her years in the hideaway. They lived in a secret annex in a canal-side house for more than two years before their hiding place was betrayed and the family sent to concentration camps. The Dutch woman who helped the family found them after Anne's arrest and gave them to her father Otto a survivor of the Holocaust. Anne wrote of the 13-year-old she had fallen for in 1940 when she was just 11 and that in Auschwitz, while Anne died in Bergen Belsen concentration camp in 1945. Anne last saw Peter a few days before she moved into the annexe, but wrote of him in her diary more than 1-1/2 years later after dreaming of him. Love overcomes everything and that is what we can see in her diary and skeptic as I am, the photo doesn't convince as being indeed the one of Anne's Peter, but it is nice just the thought of being. What do you think?

The one with the oil rules
by Martina Harvanova

To be in power for almost ten years must have an impact on the person's character and it certainly isn't a right one. From the point of the ability to sustain democracy and keep the mind clear of the thoughts of unconditional actions and governance, it definitely spoils the character. Hugo Chavez could be quite efficient example for psychologists researching the influence of authority.Controversial politician whose governance have led to widespread reforms is used to be viewed in different ways. Once he gets praises and enthusiastic support for his actions in creating alternative models of economic development and for his belief in cooperation among the world's poor nations, but mostly, he receives vehement criticism. Actually, what else could be expected from someone who is against the most influential man & American President and who refuses to behave as a friend to the world's strongest nation? Recently, the spotlight points on him again. This time the issue is based on the negotiation and threats between both countries. The case began with the action of Exxon Mobil, an American corporation, that has gone after the assets of state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA in the U.S., British and Dutch. Venezuela started to feel endangered as the actions can harm and in fact, rob the country. The fears didn't remain just on this point, Chavez went further. If the Americans won't stop freezing Venezuelan assets, they might face the problems with oil sales. The major producer of oil products can fully free set the conditions to its biggest purchaser, the cut-off of oil shipments to the U. S. could cause much troubles to the North American citizens as well as to the market. The treasure of Venezuela is extremely worthy and it is so strong factor that any tiny action done by Chavez may mirror in global measure. Venezuela is a capricious country and also Chavez has gained a reputation as a price hawk in OPEC, pushing for stringent enforcement of production quotas and higher target oil prices. For instance, at a June 2006 meeting, Venezuela was the only OPEC country calling for lowered production to drive oil prices higher. By all means, that is how Chavez manages to belong to 100 most influential people according to the Time magazine & the resources of his home country. His power seems to be unlimited at least as long as the Latin country enjoys the sufficiency of oil.

Attack
by Lenka Lehenova

Although people try to reduce violence, our world is still full of it. I always watch news where I see like people kill each other. That is really tearful. Sometimes they don't have reason...but I think that there can be any reason but nobody can kill or hurt anybody! Jose Ramos-Horta is President of East Timor. His health was in criticality after attack on Monday. Today he is in stable condition at an Australian hospital where he has been surgeons operated for three hours. In 1996 President won Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent resistance to the decades-long Indonesian occupation. Gunmen in two cars shot him in the chest and stomach. Rebel soldiers went to the house looking for him but they found out that president was on the walk and that's where he had been shot two or three times. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has been separately attacked an hour later as well but he escaped unhurt. At the moment, he and his family is in army's safeness. Assassin is Alfredo Reinado who together with his accomplice died when security forces were intervening. Reinado escaped from prison in 2006 and was charged with murder in connection with the 2006 violence. Ramos-Horta had met with Reinado on several occasions and wanted to persuade him to surrender.Prime Minister Gusmao asked for calm in the streets and appealed to people to stay at home. The United Nations controls security in the country.

Chris Cantell Discusses World News: End of reporter Ching Cheong` s detention
by Barbora Haramiova

China. One of the biggest countries in the world being gossiped about, observed and evaluated. China can be described with these three words. To describe China, one can also mention one factor which does not improve its image in the world. There are more journalists being hold in prison than in any other country. One of the prisoners who spend a part of their lives as a criminal is Ching Cheong, a journalist from Hong Kong.Ching Cheong`s past was not necessarily enlinked with journalism. In 1973 he graduated with a degree in Economics at the Hong Kong University. Then he began to work as a journalist for a newspaper supporting China. But after a Tiananmen massacre he changed his mind and in order to protest against Chinese aggression he established a magazine in which he and other journalist published comments on China. In 1996 he joined Singapore`s The Straits Times newspaper.According to his job, he visited China in 2005. The main aim of the visit was to find out some information about the former Communist Party leader Zhao Ziyang. Unfortunately he could not fulfill his task because of being charged with spying and stealing state secrets for Taiwan. Consequently he was prisoned for a period of five years. Not everybody agreed with the sentence . Organisations such as Hong Kong Journalists Association and Reporters Without Borders were interesting in setting Ching Cheong free. According to their conviction that Ch.Cheong had been arrested unfairly they organized a petition requiring an immediate release. Thanks to the courage of the various organizations, Ch.Cheong`s case was investigated again. After other discussions and trials Ching Cheong was released on 5 February 2008. The Chinese government substantiated it with the coming Chinese New Year holiday.

Fragile stability in East Timor again violated
by Tatiana Hadarova

There has been a state of emergency in East Timor since last Monday after rebel soldiers seriously wounded president Jose Ramos-Horta and fired at the prime minister convoy. The Nobel Prize-winning president was immediately airlifted to Australia, where he has been operated. According to doctors his conditions are still serious, but stable. Prime minister Xanana Gusmao was attacked an hour later, but managed to escape without any hurt. The army chief blamed United Nations, how it was possible that they failed to protect the two top leaders. But the U.N. deputy defended the organisation, that president wanted his own security, which was provided by national authorities. After this attacks, the acting President Vicente Gutterres declared the state of emergency and he hopes that it will bring the country "back to normality". Also number of U.N. soldiers and policemen and Australia's troop raised in the country. These attacks again violated calm and stability in East Timor after clashes in 2006, when 37 people were killed. In gunshot between president's security and rebels their leader Alfredo Reinado was killed. Reinado had been wanted since 2006,when he was blamed for the violence. During these two years Reinado became popular among East Timorese youth because of his insurrection against government. East Timor has been trying to maintain its stability since 2002, when they managed to gain country's independence from Indonesia. This small country of only 1 million people had been under Indonesia's occupation for 24 years . In 1996 Presidnet Horta thanks to his nonviolent resistance during these occupational years shared The Nobel Peace Prize.

Chris Cantell Discusses World News: Nature versus science
by Claudia Sonea

A little help given to nature is something that environmentalist groups cannot accept. In France they oppose strongly against the use of genetically modified corn and they pleaded for a law that would permanently ban cultivation of Monsanto's MON810, the seed for the only type of genetically modified corn now allowed in the country. The opinions are that obviously divided that if on Friday the French Senate approved a law curbing the involvement of non-governmental organizations in a state agency that manages the genetically modified crop issue, on Saturday the use of genetically modified corn crops in France was suspended until further notice. On January 11, France announced that the cultivation of genetically modified corn will be suspended and on Saturday the promise got shape. However, the measure lasts until EU will approve its permanent ban and for the time been the European Food Safety Authority says genetically modified products do not constitute a risk to human health or the environment, therefore the chance to be approved are very small. The law given on last Friday makes a misdemeanor from the destruction of farms that grow genetically modified crops and the punishment is by up to two years in prison and up to $109,000 in fines. Thus environmentalist have what to be afraid of. Austria, France, Greece and Hungary are very concerned about biotechnology. Stay connected to see to what decision the Brussels-based European Commission has come on whether member nations can ban genetically modified products that the bloc has authorized. Would you care for a corn, genetically modified?

Ukraine will repay its debt to Russia
by Zuzana Moravcova

After a Ukraine's huge unpaid gas bill caused a row with Russia, both countries now reached an agreement. Russian energy monopoly Gazprom had only been a small step before having to cut energy supplies to Ukraine. "I draw your attention to the consequences that would follow," Putin said. "It is terrible to even think that in response to this.... Russia cannot theoretically exclude aiming our offensive missile systems at Ukraine."If Kiev failed to settle its crippling $1.5-billion debt, Gazprom had threatened to cut a part of its gas supplies. The president Vladimir Putin said Gazprom was satisfied with proposals made by the Ukrainian side. "Deliveries of gas to Ukraine will be carried out at full volume," said Gazprom in a statement."We agreed that Ukraine will pay back the debt" accumulated in 2007, said Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, and confirmed that the deal had been reached, adding Ukraine would start repaying its debt on Thursday. The debt "was amassed in November-December of last year because supply contracts had not been signed by the structures involved," he told a news conference in Moscow. Gazprom's key export destination in Central Europe is Hungary, followed by the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Poland. These countries absorb around 72% of Gazprom's exports to Central Europe.Gazprom is looking to expand its presence in Asia, the Pacific, Scandinavia, the US, the UK and Belgium. The key export mains linking gas fields in West Siberia with export destinations in Western Europe traverse Ukraine. Some 90% of Russia's gas exports flow through Ukraine.

Chris Cantell Discusses World News: Rebels in Chad show the nature of locals
by Martina Harvanova

On the first sight it might seem in developing countries where people do not have the opportunities to live a life of welfare and sufficiency of almost everything, the only problem is to ensure everybody gets an adequate supply of the primary stuff such as water, food and health care. Although most of us consider it this way, the true is a bit different. Kenya or Chad act as recent examples of prevalence of solving the social and political conflicts over assuring the basic day existence. The post-election unrest and violence in Kenya caused deaths of about 1,000 people. The conflicts originate more in political misunderstandings, but the ethnic discrepancy contributed to the still worsening situation as well, or as the analysts affirm, exactly the ethnicity mobilized the outrage. However, Kenya isn't the only African country that is facing serious troubles among the inhabitants themselves. Also Chad belongs to the list of countries where the violence prevails the peaceful existence of the local people side by side. The conflict has its roots in disagreement between Chad and Sudan. Chad has accused Sudan of being behind the latest violence in Chad to prevent Europe from deploying a peacekeeping force to the border region, a mission Sudan has resisted. Both countries have long exchanged charges and denials of supporting the other's rebels. This year the violence sharpened when the rebels stormed into the capital of the oil-producing central African country and caused extensive turmoil. Chad Red Cross officials said hundreds of civilians have died, most from bullet wounds and the figure of wounded ones mounted up to 1,000. One wouldn't conceive the solving of mainly political conflicts can overweight the basic needs. Countries, where people are in serious danger due to an insufficient supply of water or health care, unveil their natural character. Oh that weather!
by Barbora Misakova

Last time I was writing about the weather's influence on policy in the US and the results of primaries, and this time will be weather the hero of my blog again. I have still the same opinion that nature is not good to trifle with. It is so strong it can destroy the biggest city in the world or colossal warship; it can demolish the biggest forest areas or even kill. So what is then human's technology in comparison with nature and its power? Nature plays with us and has no problem with late delivery of Columbus, European lab, to the space station. As forecasts say there is a big chance of about 70 percent that bad weather which hits the US in form of strong rain, snow and thunderstorms could disallow to Atlantis to make a move for some other days. Although Atlantis had problems with fuel gauges in December, engineers were trying to fix it and so enable shuttle to launch as was planned & on next Thursday. NASA Management claimed they are not going to think about canceling this launch before the Thursday's morning, if they will be thinking about it at all. Atlantis is waiting for its launch for more than two months and is prepared with its 7 member's crew to install high-tech laboratory Columbus which cost $2 billion and was designed to being a part of the ISS (International Space Station). Columbus was constructed in Europe and flown to Florida and is designed for 10 years operations. This 4.5 meters wide and 7 meters long laboratory will join another U.S lab Destiny which is already flying for 7 years. Atlantis has one other mission & to drop off not only new lab but also a new resident of space station & general of French Air Force who will get Columbus working. NASA is very anxious to fulfill this mission and I am also very curious how this space mission end up.

Will the Philharmonic concert improve relationships between U.S. And North Korea?
by Sandra Stoklaskova

After the years of misunderstandings and wars between United States and North Korea, now it is dawning for better times. Relationships among these states were interfere with diplomacy conflicts, battles and struggles. North Korea's nuclear weapons constituted a danger for the whole world, what was the main reason, why U.S. held enemy ties with this country. But on Tuesday something amazing happened. New York Philharmonic had a concert in Pyongyang, with a huge success. Some musicians left the stage in tears, after three encores and audience waving dearly. U.S. and North Korea found kind of partnership in this concert that spanned American and Korean musical traditions. When the Philharmonic played North Korean national anthem "Patriotic Song", audience stood respectfully. Drop-scene was terminated by the folk song "Arirang" and enthusiastic applause of standing audience. East Pyongyang Grand Theater attended 2.500 people and the concert was also broadcast live on North Korean TV. But North Korean leader Kim Jong II did not visit this amazing performance and we don't know whether he watched it on TV. Former U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry attended this event and called it a "historic moment," and added that Washington should as a reaction to this invite North Korean performers to the U.S. "I can say that through the concert tonight, all the members of the New York Philharmonic opened the hearts of the Korean people," said Song Sok Hwan, North Korea's vice culture minister. He added:"The concert serves as an important occasion to open a chapter of mutual understanding between the two countries."

Attack

by Lenka Lehenova

Reinado escaped from prison in 2006 and †was charged with murder in connection with the 2006 violence. Ramos-Horta had met with Reinado on several occasions and wanted to persuade him to surrender.Prime Minister Gusmao asked for calm in the streets and appealed to people to stay at home. The United Nations controls security in the country. †††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

††††††††††††††††††††A little help given to nature is something that environmentalist groups cannot accept. †††††††††††††††††††On January 11, France announced that the cultivation of genetically modified corn will be suspended and on Saturday the promise got shape. †††††††††††††††††††Austria, France, Greece and Hungary are very concerned about biotechnology.

The Rule of Blood Calls for Revenge
by Milota Sidorova

Thousands of mourners grouped on Thursday to reverate slained Hezbollah commander, Imad Moughniyah. Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas carried the coffin follwed by the sound  of marching drums, along with the fists waving in the air. To the Lebbanese and Hezbollah anthem, the mobbish crowd added the screams such as: "Death to Israel!" and  "Death to America!" Following threats from the head of Hezbollah,  Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who appeared at the funeral  through the video tape invoked the emergency at Israeli embassies and Jewish centres all over the world. Nasrallah, who is hiding since 34 days lasting Israel-Hezbollah war blaimed Israel for the assasination of  Moughniyah, one of the most wanted men on the U.S. list. He underlined that the attack passed over the natural borders of Israel and Lebbanon. The Tuesday' s bomb attack in Damascus, that shortened Moughniyah life brought out the promise for revenge. Israel immediately ordered the high alert on its embassies all over the world and advised all the Jewish centres to do the same. FBI. Activated terror squads to protect the centres and embassies in the U.SMoughniyah' s death seems to carry on the series of retaliates among Israel and Hezbollah. One must mention the bomb attack on Israel embassy in Argentina after He death of Abbas Mussawi, Hezbollah's secretary-general who had been killed during the Israeli helicopter attack in Lebannon. Two years later a Jewish cultural centre in Buenos Aires is on fire. All the links points to the assasination of Mustafa Dirani, senior leader of Hezbollah and a the airstrikes on a Hezbollah training camp in Lebannon. While Hezbollah blesses Moughniyah as a blood martyr, U.S. records taxes for the death  of more than the  hundred of people. Hezbollah, which started with only a militia, has grown to an organization with seats in the Lebanese government, a radio- and a satellite television-station, and programs for social development is accepted  by most of Arab and Muslim countries as national as a legitimate resistance movement still figures as a terroristic organisation linked with Iranian' s Shitas for six European and American states.Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, quoted that Moughniyah wasn' t the first neither the last martyr, in this war there would be million of them."Zionists, if you want this kind of open war, let the whole world listen: Let this war be open," Hassan Nasrallah told to the funeral crowd. He said that Moughniyah' s death calls for elimination of Israel.

NASA is very anxious to fulfill this mission and I am also very curious how this space mission end up.

Cuba has a "new" president

by Barbora Misakova

Sometimes the news can be funny too. Especially when you realize, that something what is interpreted as something new is actually still the same and it is not changing particular situation at all. I am talking about the newest election of Cuba's parliament which instead of changing head of the Cuba just changed the name of its leader. Well yes, Cuba has a new president, but honestly he is not as new as it looks at first sight. This is probably for the first time in history, when the change of president will not bring a change to its country. On Sunday 81-year-old Fidel Castro was replaced by his younger, 76-year old brother Raul Castro who so had become a Cuba's president. I don't know why, but it seems to me just like a little game. When you look properly on the whole situation, it is really just a name what was changed. While Raul Castro will be a president, Fidel will still have his rights & he will remain "commander in chief" and Raul will have to consult with him all major decisions related to the state and what is more Fidel still stays a formal leader of Communist Party. Not to be so ironic, I have to admit that Raul Castro is going to make some changes too. First of all he contemplates about the revaluation of the Cuban peso. This national currency is used for the basic need of people who buy utilities, food ration and pay for public transportation. While the opinion of the U.S. is still the same, people living in Cuba have different points of view. Some of them really adore Fidel Castro, consider him to be "trustworthy man" and think his step was right. But there are others who don't believe in Cuba and compare it to the jail where is no openness. The U.S. insists that the change from one Castro to another is not significant and its is just a "transfer of authority and power from dictator to dictator light" and I have to admit they depicted it very clearly. †

US and North Korea culturally interconnected
by Lenka Filipova

North Korea welcome cordially the New York Philharmonic on Monday. This was aimed to bring the end to the war that have been both countries engaged in for more than a half of the century. The Korean invitation was sent a year ago and was cheerfully appraised by the orchestra. The Philharmonic is the first cultural American group which performed in the communist Korea, which was the adversary for a long time to U.S. The concert, which was going to be performed by 106 orchestra members, itself took place on Tuesday. Surprisingly, but at the same time suavely, the concert will be broadcast on state radio and TV, where the U.S. used to be strongly criticized. In addition to the excellent and brilliant performance, the orchestra will offer some classes to North Korean students and its members will play together with the members of the North's State Symphony Orchestra. As the Philharmonic music director Lorin Maazel said, he considered this act of amity as really suitable nevertheless both countries were in discordant. He also added that music has always been a bond that joins even foes and what is more, it has nothing to do with politics. Maazel told that music was always for entertainment and rather intimate. Despite the fact that before the arrival of American orchestra to North Korea some anti-American slogan and billboards occurred, the orchestra director render friendly attitude toward Koren art and Korean people henceforth. Even the exception was made to the Philharmonic orchestra as the majority of visitors to Pyongyang are always taken firstly to the statue of Kim II Sung to show the respect to him, it left out this obligation.

Belgrade in a riot
by Zuzana Zelenakova

On Thursday, the capital of Serbia was swept in a storm of demonstrations and even attacks aimed at foreign embassies. It seems the U.S. Embassy suffered the biggest damage as it was set on fire. It was Serbs' reaction to Kosovo's declaration of independence. Serbia and Serbs living in Kosovo and representing about 10 percent of the population refuse to give it up, mainly because it is a common belief that the origins of Serbian state and religion lay here. Hovewer, since the war 1999 Kosovo had been under the authority of the United Nations with NATO led forces as the security guarantee, but at least officially it was still under the sovereignity of Serbia. On February 17, 2008, Kosovo's Albanian leadership declared inpependence and it became the Republic of Kosovo. Over a dozen states recognized its new status, notably the United States, France, Britain and Germany. Well, the consequences were quite tumultuous. Masked attackers broke into to the building of U.S. Embassy and set it on fire around 7 p.m when it was closed. Afterwards, a charred body of one of the rioters was found on the premises. Police and firefighters got to the sight after 45 minutes and managed to put up the fire and ride down the mob using tear gas. Then the protesters scattered into the streets and other clashs with police were reported. Also numerous shops were looted including McDonald's. In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in his statement: "We want to strongly urge them, and we are in contact with them, to make sure that they devote the assets to deal with this situation," referring to the Serbian government.

Russia cannot theoretically exclude aiming our offensive missile systems at Ukraine." If Kiev failed to settle its crippling $1.5-billion debt, Gazprom had threatened to cut a part of its gas supplies. The president Vladimir Putin said Gazprom was satisfied with proposals made by the Ukrainian side. "Deliveries of gas to Ukraine will be carried out at full volume," said Gazprom in a statement. "We agreed that Ukraine will pay back the debt" accumulated in 2007, said Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, and confirmed that the deal had been reached, adding Ukraine would start repaying its debt on Thursday. The debt "was amassed in November-December of last year because supply contracts had not been signed by the structures involved," he told a news conference in Moscow. Gazprom's key export destination in Central Europe is Hungary, followed by the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Poland. These countries absorb around 72% of Gazprom's exports to Central Europe. Gazprom is looking to expand its presence in Asia, the Pacific, Scandinavia, the US, the UK and Belgium. The key export mains linking gas fields in West Siberia with export destinations in Western Europe traverse Ukraine. Some 90% of Russia's gas exports flow through Ukraine.
