Afghanistan Breaking Up Dutch Government
by Milota Sidorova

It is interesting that something like this could happen in the one of the most liberal countries in Europe. Nederland's government is being split, since it hasn't agreed on whether it would postpone its military mission in Afghanistan or not. Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has resigned from his post along with another twelve Labour Party cabinet members, mostly ministers.Balkenende failed to push the proposal in the governmental talks and the failure has been named as the reason for resignation. The news came after more than 16 hours of talks in The Hague. Although it seemed the proposal could be passed, politicians failed to come to an agreement between the Pvd! A and Christian Democratic Appeal, the senior partner in governing coalition. There have also been conflicts within PvdA, because vice-prime Minister Wouter Bos stated the party would not support the mission in Afghanistan. The army withdrawal is generally very unpopular political decision. NATO head Anders Fogh Rasmussen had asked all European members to extend their training in Afghanistan. It is sure that everyone defending this step would have to take the risk. It means twice more before elections. Critics say, Bos was one of this kind. He's been actually running in upcoming municipal elections on March 3rd. Whatever. There are always more than one angle when speaking of consequences. While Balkenende's image may suffer or gain, playing the victim, there may be more profiting in less or more visible way. Queen Beatrix has received the resignation, so the decision is now up to her. If she agrees, the government elections planned on March 2010 would have to be brought for! ward.
