UN calls for record $1.44bn for Haiti

The United Nation launched its biggest appeal for humanitarian aid. The UN will try to raise 1.44 billion dollars to help earthquake victims in Haiti. Situation in camps in Haiti's capital worsened after heavy rain in Thursday. There is an urgent need for shelters. Some experts say that the earthquake in Haiti was the worst natural disaster in modern history. Aid workers in Haiti are doing everything possible, and even more, to distribute enough tarpaulins to the more than one million people who stayed without home. At the beginning the distribution was slowed because of the debate over the best strategy. The tarpaulins have been given only to about 272 thousands people! out of million so far. But tarpaulins and shelters are not final solution. When the rainy season comes in May, shelter will not be sufficient. Many Haitians spent Thursday trying to wash their clothes dirty from the mud, drying their mattresses and waiting in line for vaccinations. Considering the fact that Haiti was the poorest country in the America even before the earthquake and also its disastrous impact on the country, UN chief Ban Ki-moon has launched the biggest appeal for humanitarian aid ever. A year-long appeal includes a request of 577 million dollars made right after the devastating quake. The priority is to provide shelters, sanitation and other necessary humanitarian assistance. Ban Ki-Moon promised people of Haiti hep to recover and rebuild and pleased donors to follow with their commitments. Information about the usage of the money are posted at the HaitiSpecialEnvoy.org website. The previous biggest natural disaster appeal came in 2005 after the! Indian Ocean tsunami.
