Does Iran continue with nuclear research?
by Barbora Misakova
Every time I hear anything about Iran I get a headache. Taliban, killed soldiers, uranium, bombs – that all is just making me nervous and irritable. And what is worse, it is constantly about the same. Like life had been stopped there and everything was spinning around those few things. According to the UN nuclear watchdog Iran is trying to create a nuclear payload for a missile. People monitoring Iran and its activities are concerned that Iran not only works on developing a nuclear payload but it had already produced its first, small batch of uranium enriched to 20 percent. While West sees these developments as secret attempt to produce nuclear weapons, Tehran says al! l its steps are made to yield electricity or radio-isotopes for agriculture or medicine. The IAEA’s five years investigation ended up and Washington assessed that Iran halted its nuclear research in 2003. Now it seems they were wrong. Western allies believe that Iran continued the program and for the first time also IAEA’s report is offering independent support. This report says: “The information available to the agency is extensive . . . broadly consistent and credible in terms of the technical detail, the time frame in which the activities were conducted and the people and organizations involved.” If the old suspicions were proved it would mean that Iran has coordinated efforts to process uranium, test explosives at high altitude and revamp a ballistic missile cone to be suitable for a nuclear warhead. And in simple terms it would not be ok.
