UN calls on world to collect $1.44 bn for quake-hit Haiti
by Magdalena Rosova

The United Nation has launched its biggest appeal for humanitarian aid in its history. The UN is determined to raise 1.44 billion dollars to help earthquake victims in Haiti. Situation in camps in Haiti's capital worsened after last weeks' heavy rain. There is an urgent need for shelters. Aid workers in Haiti are working hard to distribute enough tarpaulins to the more than one million people who are without home. At the beginning the distribution was slowed due to the debate over the best strategy of distribution. The tarpaulins have been given only to about 272 thousands people out of million so far. But tarpaulins and shelters are only temporary solution. When the ra! iny season comes in May, shelter will not be enough. Some experts say that the earthquake in Haiti was the worst natural disaster in modern history. Considering the fact that Haiti was the poorest country in the America even before the horrible earthquake and also considering the disastrous impact of the quake on the country, UN chief Ban Ki-moon has launched the biggest appeal for humanitarian aid ever. A year-long appeal includes a request of 577 million dollars made right after the devastating quake. The priority is to provide shelters, sanitation and other necessary humanitarian assistance. Ban Ki-Moon promised people of Haiti hep to recover and rebuild and asked and pleased people to donor with their financial gifts. Information about the usage of the money are posted at the HaitiSpecialEnvoy.org website. The previous biggest natural disaster appeal came in 2005 after the Indian Ocean tsunami.
