Yvo De Boer resignes from the post of UN climate chief
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Yvo De Boer UN climate chief announced his resignation from the post Thursday after four years of leading climate talks. The future of a new treaty on global warming thus remains uncertain. De Boer´s presence in the office did not bring the results he hoped for and so he decided to continue his carrier in the business area. His departure takes effect on July 1 at a conference concerning attempts to control the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in Cancun, Mexico. According to scientists, these will only increase the number of weather-related disasters in the future. De Boer´s resignation "comes at the worst time in the climate change negotiations," said Agus Purn! omo, Indonesia's special presidential assistant on climate change. "His decision will ultimately add to the difficulties we already have in reaching a successful outcome in Mexico." On the other hand, many think there is no reason to be afraid that his departure will have a harmful effect upon the talks. In, fact it could bring some fresh air in form of his successor. De Boer himself is one of those who share this point of view. "I hope my successor will rebuild confidence in the process," he said. However, for now there is no candidate in sight. New UN climate chief will be named by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who has placed climate change issues among UN´s priorities. He accepted Yvo De Boer´s resignation with regret and confessed openly that the man will be extremely hard to replace. Given De Boer´s statements it could be assumed that disappointment following the Copenhagen summit that took place about two months ago contributed to his decision to l! eave the office. "After Copenhagen I was very depressed. I wa! s depres sed for a few weeks," he said.
