At least two people dead and about one hundred injured, these are the consequences of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico on Sunday. Powerful quake was felt also in California with the town hit hardest on the US side of the borders being Calexico, California. The border town represents a mixture of two cultures, as its name suggests, the American and the Mexican and is the best solution for those are fond of small-town way of life and sunny weather all year round. Two building collapsed downtown due to the quake, also the city´s water treatment plant has been damaged. As a result, people were asked to limit their water usage as much as possible. And of course! the debris laying on the streets of what the city has just been through. "It will be months before downtown is back," said Hildy Carrillo, executive director of the Calexico Chamber of Comerce. "It's a mess." Help to those affected by the earthquake came right on Monday morning. The Salvation Army offered food and water to people and established a shelter for those who would need I as well. Police patrols kept an eye on businesses in the city on Sunday night. The building that collapsed were mainly pre-war and not adapted to handle the quake of this magnitude. "Downtown is going to remain closed until further notice," said Calexico police Lt. Gonzalo Gerardo. The center of the quake was about 19 miles south of Mexicali, which is the northernmost city in Latin America. "It felt like I was in a canoe in the middle of the ocean," said Rosendo Garcia of the earthquake that struck at 3.40 pm. Seismic waves headed north into Southern California sweeping through Calexico. The tem! blor was felt as far as Phoenix and Las Vegas. However, most o! f the da mage was restricted to the area of Imperial Valley.
