Ladies Obama and Biden remind the world about Haiti by Zivka Deleva

Worried U.S first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, yesterday surprisingly visited Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. The aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake that happened three months ago is still terrifying and lady Obama wanted to see that in person. The visit was for the Haiti people to be reminded of the U.S support in the recovery and rebuilding of the Caribbean country. Unquestioned is the American support as the biggest of all for the devastated country. Or as the first lady said – “the devastation is definitely powerful”. The two eminent ladies visited few camps where hundreds of adults and children live. Some! of Haiti artists are trying to make life more peaceful to the children creating art projects, which are part of a post-quake therapy program. Kids performed for the important guests, singing “We are glad to see you…We say let’s be happy.” Their master is Philippe Dodard, Haitian graphic artist and painter. The idea is for this program to be extended in more Haiti’s communities, because the terrifying earthquake devastated almost 90 percent of the schools around the capital, and 40 percent in other parts of the country. Michelle Obama’s biggest efforts are in the humanitarian work, and Haiti has been the biggest challenge for her. “It was important for Jill and I to come now because we’re at the point where the relief efforts are under way, but the attention of the world starts to wane a bit. As we enter the rainy season and the hurricane season…the issues are just going to become more compounded.” – said Ob! ama. However, let’s hope that this kind of visit, that ! maybe di dn’t bring direct help to Haiti people, will attract more attention to the world that in this islands country there is still a lot to be done, for the life to get back to normal. If that ever happens.
