Every candle lits in Poland
by Barbora Misakova
Not only Poland, but the whole world was shocked by the information about the plane crash that killed President Lech Kaczynski (60), the first lady and dozens of senior Polish leaders on Saturday. While Poland observes a week of commemoration, Russia and European Union mark an official day of mourning on Monday. The body of Polish President arrived in Warsaw on Sunday and the flag-drapped coffin was met by acting President Bronislaw Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. After a short, sombre ceremony in Russia and after another religious ceremony in Poland was the coffin driven to the presidential palace, where it will be available for public viewing. As Russian offici! als informed the remains of the other victims will now be sent to Moscow for identification. Except president, there was also the army’s chief of staff, the central bank governor, the deputy foreign minister and several members of parliament on the board. This crash lost the nation’s leader and some of the country’s brightest minds. Area of the presidential palace is flooded by candles, wreaths and flowers, thousands of people are gathering there just like at the nearby Pilsudski Square. As Cyril Vanier, France 24’s reporter said: “What you see here is a testimony to the deep, deep feeling of solidarity here in Poland. Each candle lit represents one Pole who decided to come here and show his or her solidarity.” Russia, in a further gesture of solidarity with Poland, has declared April 12 a day of mourning for the crash.
