When will this all end up?
by Barbora Misakova
How many of us have to die to stop this chain of tragedies and dramas? Will we die out just like dinosaurs or will we kill each other out? Maybe the nature will work it out instead of us. Floods in Rio de Janeiro killed at least 95 people – 39 of them died in metropolitan Rio, 41 were killed in Niteroi, the city on the other side of Rio’s Guanabara Bay. According to official information torrential rain caused landslides and floods that hit several neighborhoods of this Brazilian city. Hundreds of people became from one day to another homeless, roads are flooded, and city is paralyzed. Heavy rains started on Monday and continued to fall through most of Tuesday. S! hacks in Rio’s hillside slums where simply swept away by mudslides which also killed most of the victims. As there are many injured people and others are reported missing, the death toll is certain to rise. Public school stay closed on Wednesday, many companies shut down their offices and residents are warned to stay away from risky hillside areas. The fifth of Rio’s people live in the slums which are suffering the most – about 10,000 houses remained at risk of collapse. Although this downpour is the worst Rio has record in at least 30 years, it is not the only one. In January floods and mudslides killed at least 76 people in Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais and dozens of people were killed in a landslide at a beach resort between Rio and Santos. The latest flooding will probably question Rio’s ability to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
