After a bloody uprising, winning opposition leaders in Kyrgyzstan declared they would hold power in the country for six months. The leaders further assured U.S. that it can keep a strategic air base in Kyrgyzstan. The revolt left at least 75 people dead and hundreds of people were wounded. Deopsed president Kurmanbek Bakiyev refused to give up and relinquish power. After his speech a gunfire broke out. In consequence, bands of armed marauders filled the capital, Bishkek, even though the opposition leadership warned them that looter would be shot. Earlier that day, angry crowd gathered in front of the government headquarter and shouted anti-Bakiyev slogans. The crow! d was in subdued mood as people were shocked with the violence that government troops unleashed against the unarmed protesters a day before. New security officials have been appointed and they promised to restore calm and in the country and end the nighttime lawlessness that terrorized residents in Bishkek. In Kyrgyzstan there is an important U.S. military base which supports the fighting in Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan also hosts a Russian military base and so it is the only nation where both Russia and United states have bases.
