Russian communists losing their power?
by Barbora Misakova
Even though the exact date of the World War II’s end is not universally agreed, here in Europe it is 8th May which we celebrate as the victory over fascism. The question still remains: how do we actually celebrate it? There were few discusses on TV, it was maybe mentioned on the evening news or on the radio, but that’s all. Although it is national holiday, its celebration cannot be compared with Russian Red Square military parade. The 65th anniversary of victory is worth to be commemorated. World War II victors – Russia, the United States, Britain and France were celebrating together when foreign leaders watched over 11,000 troops parading to the sound of ! a huge military band. As Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stressed: “Only together can we confront today’s threats, only on the basis of good neighborliness can we solve the problems of global security.” But not all of Russians share Medvedev’s enthusiasm and not all of them interpret the presence of foreign troops as a good sign. Communists pledged to hold a protest march against NATO forces for marching over a hallowed square. As Sergei Obukhov, a member of the party’s Central Committee said: “Foreign troops have never appeared on Red Square. It’s a violation of tradition. The presence of foreign troops with weapons in their hands is…an unnecessary reminder that we lost the Cold War.” However a poll by the independent Levada Centre showed that there are still more people who see presence of NATO troops at the parade as wholly or partly positive sign. And I must say that 55 percent is for communist Russia quite enough.!
