What will Hatoyama do?
by Barbora Misakova

Yesterday there were British politicians and their fear of cuts that could decrease not only budged deficit but also voters’ support. Today for a change it is Japanese Prime Minister that made promise and now has serious problems with carrying it out. Earlier hopes that Yukio Hatoyama could relocate the Futenma US marine base are gone. Afraid he will lose support of voters on one hand and make Washington angry on the other, Hatoyama rather prefers compromise. Except its full relocation he suggests to local people to accept at least part of a controversial base on the island. Some Futenma Marines should be shifted to the island of Tokunoshima, domestic media informed. ! During his first visit to Okinawa since taking office, Prime Minister Hatoyama told reporters: “Whenever you move a base or build a new one, there will be critical voices from local people. I must accept those feelings, but I would like the people of the whole country to understand and be willing to share the burden, because the bases are necessary for national security.” Although he didn’t give further details, moving the whole base off the island would be too difficult. But as it seems local residents don’t mind and the only thing they want is to stop noise, crime and accidents associated with the military presence. That’s why hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the island’s capital on Tuesday asking Hatoyama to keep his promises. The question is not only how will Hatoyama fulfill what he promised, but also who will be satisfied lastly.
