North Korea warns of military response if UN questions the country over ship sinking
by Zuzana Zelenakova

North Korea still continues to deny sinking of South Korean Navy ship Cheonan that occurred on March 26 in the Yellow Sea. Although the investigation carried out by a team of international experts concluded that the ship was sunk by a torpedo from North Korean submarine Pyongyang´s stance is unshakable. Cheonan was carrying a crew of 104, only 58 of crew members were rescued. So far, bodies of 40 soldiers were found. Tensions between North and South Korea escalated after both countries delivered their presentations on the matter before the Security Council on Thursday. Fragments of a torpedo that hit the South Korean ship were presented by the group of investigators i! ncluding Americans, Brits and Australians. Yoon Duk-yong, the co-chairman of the joint investigation team identified the torpedo as a North Korean CHT-025. “There is no other plausible explanation,” he said. “We confirmed that a few small submarines and a mother ship supporting them left a North Korean naval base in the West Sea two, three days prior to the attack and returned to port two, three days after the attack,” he added. The United States and Japan took the South Korea´s side immediately condemning the North Korean “act of aggression”. The Pyongyang´s response to the accusations was quick to come. In a statement by the spokesman of the ruling National Defense Commission headed by Kim Jong-il the South Korean government was called a “group of traitors” that managed to fabricate such a conspiracy in order to gain international support and achieve its goals. "If the Security Council is again deceived by another! lie and tackles this case unfairly, thus failing to prevent a! ny confl ict on the Korean peninsula, the U.S. and the Security Council shall bear the full responsibility for the subsequent consequences," warned North Korea´s UN Ambassador Sin Son Ho at a news conference.
