Austria together with rest of Europe was shocked by horrible case of father who abused his daughter for several decades, and kept her hidden in a basement cellar under their house. Police informed on Monday that Josef Fritzl from Amstetten confessed to his crime. The fact that he fathered seven children with her only adds to the monstrosity of the whole case. Elisabeth now aged 42 lived in her underground prison for 24 years. Three of her children – two boys and a girl- stayed with her and grew up without seeing a daylight while other three were brought up by Josef Fritzl and his wife.One of the children died in infancy. Mrs. Fritzl believed all the time that her daughter who was missing since 1984 decided herself to leave her family. Elisabeth´s mother found a letter in which the daughter told her parents not to look for her. Then three babies were found at their doorsteps with a note from Elisabeth that said she could not afford to take care of them. And so they were raised by their father and grandfather at the same time. The truth was revealed after the 19-years-old Kerstin became seriously ill and was dropped off at the local hospital. The doctors then urged the girl´s mother to show up in order to give some information about Kerstin´s medical history. Josef Fritzl then released Elisabeth with the children from the cellar and told his wife Rosemarie that she decided to come back home. It is not clear though how the police got involved. Elisabeth is currently in care of doctors and psychologists. When it comes to the children “They are being cared for individually – those between 12 and 16 years of age who grew up with their grandparents and two boys who, when they came out with their mother yesterday, saw the daylight for the first time in their lives,” said police spokesman Franz Polzer.
