High-speed trains accident in China Zuzana Zelenakova
Imagine you comfortably seated in a modern high-speed train and enjoying the view of the beautiful countryside passing by behind the window. You are on the verge of falling asleep. But suddenly the whole world turns upside down, you are hit by an invisible force and thrown aside. Everywhere, people are screaming. Probably that is how felt most of the passengers involved in a terrible crash in eastern China. On Monday morning two high-speed passenger trains slammed into each other in a Shandong province near the city of Zibo. 70 people were killed and 420 injured. The accident happened when a train traveling from Beijing to Qingdao, the site of the Olympics sailing competition, derailed. Subsequently, it hit the other passenger train. Nine carriages of the first train ended up in a ditch. The second train traveling from Yantai to Xuzhou was swept off its tracks but did not tumble. The possibility of terrorists being behind the accident was rejected according to the Xinhua News Agency. It was due to the failure of human factor. “I suddenly felt the train, like a roller coaster, topple...to one side and all the way to the other side. When it finally went of the tracks, many people fell on me,” said one passenger. “I saw a girl who was trying to help her boyfriend out of the train, but he was dead,” she added. Also local villagers were helping people to get out of the carriages using different farm tools. No foreigners were among the dead, only four Frenchmen were injured. Also Hu Weidong, a coach of China´s sailing team, was involved in the accident. “There were grave injuries to his neck and spine, which we fear could cause paralysis,” said Dr. Zhang Jun, head of the orthopedics department in Zibo hospital.
