Chaos is ruling Chile. Army and the international help with great delay.
by Milota Sidorova

Yet, We haven't woke up from Haiti disaster, the another one in Chile is ringing the alarm. The earthquake of 8.8 magnitude hit the city of Concepción and just few hours after strong wave of tsunami destroyed several tens of villages on the coast. More than 700 people died during this catastrophe. The disaster totaled a damage of 15 billion dollars. What was so interesting about this case was amazing delay and the military mobilization on laden areas. Army that played the key role during the dictatorship, has been playing one of the most important roles in the country. Just in the time the government was dealing the new financial funds for reorganizing the army, this for! ce was unable to restore the order and provide the basic help.Military representatives said the only disadvantage was that journalists and people reached the areas sooner than army. It had to be really difficult to get there because more than 24 hours after the quake there was only 100 soldiers. The mobilization and the coordination soon became the target of public and international critics. What was even more interesting was the president Michelle Bachelet asked for the international help more than two days after the disaster. What was she waiting for?Now clearing hospitals, doctors and food supplies are the most demanded. International media also reported desperate people were robbing every store they could find. The cause was simple – the hunger. The army had to fight these “hooligans” and during the riots one civil was killed. Military representatives said people were going crazy, constantly disturbing the orders – for example the ban of night w! alking. But people demanded the most basic supplies – wa! ter, foo d and electricity. So now it seems to be clear – the ruling power of the country was failing its basic role – to protect its people. As for the international aid – one can't speak in large scale – so far, European Union offering four million dollars, Japan three million and China one million. The U.S. Promised to help, but didn't specify the numbers. As for the massive advertisements and campaigns, the rest of the world seems to be perfectly unaware of this disaster – comparing to Haitian catastrophe.
