Let the people eat genetically modified food and make a profit on it
by Milota Sidorova
Wolf is a wolf and never be a sheep. That rules twice about the economists.Even if they flirt with the other aspects of the problem, they think only money matters. So it is with the upcoming genetically modified potatoes issue. With the blessing of EU commission and interest groups farmers should grow genetically modified new variety of potatoes, called Amflora. The economical point of view has been perfectly depicted by Garlich von Essen, secretary general of European Seeds, the seed industry’s main lobbying group in Europe who suggested that Europe was consuming thousands of tons of genetically modified products, so why would be such problem to grow it on the contin! ent?Maybe we should think about the problem of genetically modified goods as well. Right now, more than half of the world's production of corn and wheat is coming from GM production. This is mainly done in the U.S. One has to say, the U.S. has no duty to inform its people about the ingredients or caloric nutrition values. Businessmen literally passed the rule of disinformation. People don't know what they are eating. And some scientists expressed doubts whether public could be sufficiently aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Genetically modified plant is different from a plant, grown by normal breeding. We all know the evolution offers great solutions in form of improved genes – for example, some plants may gain a resistance against dry climate if it manages to survive and adapt in such conditions for several generations.Genetically modification is including animals' genes to the plant genetic information. It's so unnatural, as we can never see a living creatur! e – hybrid of plant and animal. So technically, the natu! re never does so. However, when the animal gene is put into the plant, it may get the resistance against the dry climate or some pest, but there are consequences. According researches, genetically modified plants produce significantly higher portion of immune chemicals that are toxic for human. As the result is 50 percent chance to create allergic reaction. And that is a fact – every second person on this planet suffers from allergy. No wonder, if we live in such polluted environment. But the food is the main ground of our health. Allergy and health problems are not the only issue here – finding a new, resisting and profit-making plant shouldn't have its natural predators. Or if it destroys its original pest, a free space in the food chain will be supplied by three more pests. It's the same as using chemicals to grow more crops – I will mention the case in Mexico where they grew a cotton. Farmers used the chemical to kill its pest. For one season it seemed to be w! orking. The next season there was a new generation of pest that was resisting to this chemical. And while this generation has been reduced the place for two more pest was created. So instead of one pest, farmers had to used upgraded version of a chemical to get rid of three pest. But it didn't work. Pests adapted (the power of evolution) and the next year there were eight pests on the same field. Farmers didn't have new chemical to fight them. So at the end, the major part of the crop has been destroyed, just because of interrupting the natural balance.Genetical modification is no different – and yet, we feel the consequences. So far, it's only our health been affected. But if you count – the business with the health and the death is the most profitable – you will find the effort of EU commission and background policies to grow such plants here, very understandable. Profitable.
